Childhood Obesity Definition

By Em Duncan

Most parents all over the world confirm that one of the biggest problems they have with their children is obesity. People should not continue to ignore the problem of child obesity; more has to be done and done fast to curb it.

Don't think that because a child is obese he/she is dumb - many are actually smart and will understand why they should work to loose weight, if your explanation makes sense. The kind of food children eat can be responsible for their obesity.

Calories and fats are guilty causes of obesity in the food children eat. Just watching the type of food your children eat can help them loose weight.

You can't force your child to eat what they don't want to eat, but you can cajole them If they stick to it and end up losing the weight, they will thank you for it because of the new found confidence they will have in themselves.

For the US, here are the childhood obesity stats: about 16% of children aged 6 to 19 yrs are either overweight or obese. The childhood obesity bmi cut-off varies by age.

No one needs to teach anybody how to gain weight; for most people it comes naturally. Losing weight on the other hand is a feat that many find difficult to perform on their own. When faced with doctor's orders, they try out for a while, but many give up before they get there. Don't be like such people. It's very important to do all you can to lose weight, especially if you are concerned about your self confidence.

Losing too much weight is asking for trouble. Although excess fat is bad for your body, some amount of fat is necessary for complete body functions. Anything under the clinical limits will result in side effects that may not be too favorable.

Chronic illness can also cause you to lose weight. As a matter of fact, I know of a guy who, understanding that he was prone to a certain feverish relapse every other month, he would eat himself to substantial fat prior to that. Months later, when he fell ill, he would lose all that weight in a couple of days. Cute idea, but don't try it at home.

Some people rely on illness to help them lose weight. While this is fair enough the first time around, you shouldn't make a habit of it. Getting used to such could result in some kind of cry-wolf syndrome in which you might not recover from the illness soon enough. In the end, you lose.
