Preventative Dental Appointments To Ward Off Receding Gums

By Jill Strom

The people who are most plagued by trouble with receding gums are usually those over the age of forty. However, this condition can also affect younger people, even those who are in their teens. There are many things that will cause the gums in your mouth to recede. If not treated, this condition can turn into a bigger problem and become very painful.

One simple cause of receding gums is brushing your teeth too much. Although you may think you are doing a good thing, you are actually wearing away the precious enamel on and around the gum line. Over time, you will end up with not only problems with your gums being worn away; you will also have sensitive teeth. Having teeth that are sensitive can be painful.

If your gums have been receding for a long time, then chances are you will end up with gingivitis. This is a condition that is caused from the bacteria from food getting into the spaces between your teeth and gums causing severe inflammation. There are some steps that your dentist can take in treating gingivitis.

The tartar that builds up on your teeth from not getting them cleaned in the right way or enough times is a major factor in the cause of receding gums. If you take care to make your preventative dental appointments, you will most likely have a less trouble with your gums and with tartar causing the discoloration of your teeth.

Would you believe that you have 22 different kinds of bacteria working around in your mouth on a daily basis? That is one reason why you have tooth decay and trouble with your gums among other things. Making sure to keep up with dental cleanings and your own daily dental hygiene is imperative to helping your body stay in control of these rampant germs.

When your receding gums get to an advanced state, you may need more than just a cleaning. Your dentist may recommend periodontal plastic surgery to repair the worst parts of your gum tissue. This is performed by borrowing healthy tissue from other areas and grafting it onto the areas that needs the growth of new and healthy tissue. This has been proven to be an effective treatment for severe gingivitis and in cases of advanced receding gums.

When the air is able to get to exposed roots due to receding gums, you are going to experience pain. You can have this problem alleviated even if you don't have enough healthy tissue to borrow from for grafting. There is a procedure called Acellular dermal matrix that will allow you to have gum grafting using the healthy tissue of donors.

Your dental health means everything in how you feel, how you digest your food, and many other of your bodily functions will depend on how well you can chew your food. If your teeth are in the state of decay or you have receding gums, chances are there is a level of inflammation or infection involved as well that can cause a myriad of other health problem. Make sure to visit your dentist on a regular basis to avoid these kinds of dental problems.
