Tips to Use to Prevent Infant Allergies

By Angela C. Briscoe

Infant Allergies can be very harmful if not treated correctly. It is important that you understand what allergies are and how you can treat them. Allergies are a way that your body protects itself by triggering an immune response. This can be in different ways such as rashes, watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing to name a few.

Severe cases of allergies can be life threatening to your infant. Not all children with allergies have a family history of allergies. You also need to know the difference between intolerance and allergic reaction. Your pediatrician can help you and answer any questions you may have.

When Infant Allergies are the issue it is advisable not to try and provide home remedies without your doctor's consent. You should always contact your family doctor or pediatrician at once if you suspect that your baby is displaying any allergy related signs and symptoms. An incorrect medication or treatment that is given to your child can complicate the problem or worsen the symptoms. The telltale symptoms of an allergy are generally signs such as tearing and redness of the eyes; complaints of a stuffy or runny nose; skin rashes and hives or respiratory problems. Always be wary of your infant's surroundings and be alert for anything new that the baby could have been exposed to within the most recent 24 hour period. This information can be valuable when you try to discover what the allergy stimulus might have been.

Choosing the wrong treatment or medication to use can make your child's situation worse than before. The allergy symptoms to watch for include problems such as rashes, hives, teary eyes, constant sneezing or a stuffy/runny nose. Make sure that you are aware of any new products that your baby may have been in contact with in a 24 hour period and this will help you in the event that you need to figure out the trigger for an allergic response.

Daily vacuuming and disinfection can reduce most of the common allergy triggers. These chores should be done to all of the rooms where your infant will be sleeping or playing. HEPA filters are a good addition to any home because they can be used in HEPA appliances or in a vacuum cleaner. These filters can collect and contain almost all of the allergen substances in your house.

Another thing you can do to help prevent Infant Allergies is by controlling the humidity in your home. Wash bedding in hot water setting and make sure to dry completely. You can also obtain allergen free mattress covers and pillow covers to give an extra layer of protection. Try to avoid letting your pets into the baby's sleeping area. While pets are very common they can also be a trigger for your child.
