Should you suffer from the itching and burning of eczema, you will be all too aware of the misery that it can cause. However, a solution may have been discovered in the form of oriental healing herbs.
Recent research results, presented at the yearly meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, propose that orthodox Chinese herbal treatments might be of assistance in the treatment of eczema sufferers.
In order to address concerns about whether a non-western approach works, and is safe, medical researcher Julia Wisniewski, MD, of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York undertook studies on 14 children who were suffering from eczema and were treated using traditional Chinese methods between August 2006 and May 2008.
Each of them drank Erka Shizheng Herbal Tea twice daily, took a herbal bath for at least 15 minutes, and rubbed herbal cream on their skin several times a day. Additionally, they were treated using acupuncture.
At the start of the research period, more than 50% of the children had severe symptoms, after 8 months of this regime, the majority were suffering from just mild symptoms. The children also required less medication (steroids, antibiotics and antihistamines) after only three months of being treated.
As for eczema in adults, a team of researchers in Japan learned that it's just children who can reap the benefits of Chinese medicine. Their study involved 274 adults who had dealt with eczema for around 12 years on average. About 30% had symptoms that were classified as severe or very severe.
After 12-16 weeks of being treated with herbal remedies which had been chosen and administered based on the patient's symptoms, around 85% were symptom free. A further 10% were said to be very much better.
In all areas, while more work is required, these studies offer encouraging results and indicate that, as an eczema sufferer, it's time to consider using traditional Chinese healing herbs or treatments.
