The Effects Of Sleep Deprivation

By Edward Neilson

The day is divided into 24 hours, but the normal person sleeps between 1/4th and 1/3rd of their day, which is a good portion of the day you're supposed to be sleeping. While it may be considered down time, or unproductive time, there is actually a lot going on inside your body while you sleep. If you are deprived of sleep, you not being helped by those benefits from sleeping.

Experts have suggested that you get about 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night. Your body and brain will be able to recoup and function at their best. Our muscles are allowed to rest and well as our brain cells are also given a chance to revive themselves.

Sleep deprivation is when the healing processes that take place while sleeping are interrupted. You may experience memory loss or a weaker immune system if you aren't getting enough sleep. If your sleep deprivation lasts for a long time, it can be detrimental to your body and cause serious illnesses.

When your immune system is weak, it will make it so your body can't fight any viruses that you may be exposed to. If you are getting the flu or cold more often than your peers, than it may be because of your sleep deprivation. You may miss out on work, which could affect you financially, if you aren't getting enough sleep.

If you are wondering if you are sleep deprived, there are a few ways to know. If you are needing to take naps every day, or if you are falling asleep throughout the day, that may be a sign. Even if this is a normal thing for you, it isn't healthy.

One way to notice if you have sleep deprivation is to keep a sleep log. If you chart each night what time you go to bed and what time you wake up, you may notice a pattern. If you aren't meeting the optimum levels of sleep, between seven and nine hours, then you are deprived of sleep.

If you keep your bed nice and clean and comfortable, you can get a better nights rest. If your sheets are clean, this adds to your comfort while sleeping. If you open a window during the night, weather permitting, your body will be able to get fresh air, allowing you to sleep better.

All in all, your body will be negatively affected if you are not getting enough sleep. One thing to try is medications or pills that will help you to sleep better. Your life and health will appreciate it if you get a good nights rest, each and every night.
