Overview Of Yeast Infections

By Karen Jones

Yeast infections are difficult to cope with, as many people can be embarrassed to go to their doctor about it. This is made worse by the fact that many people consider yeast infections to be relatively mild problems and hence don't need treatment, even if they are very uncomfortable.

It is true that yeast infections are usually quite easy to solve, but if you have one there is definitely a need to see a doctor. You shouldn't try and diagnose yourself even if you are sure you have a yeast infection, because the same symptoms can be caused by many different problems. A doctor will be able to tell you exactly what is wrong with you and help you to get it sorted as soon as possible, rather than trying to find the solution yourself, where you could get it wrong.

Another reason that you should always visit a doctor is that quite often if yeast infections are recurring they are being caused by an underlying problem which must be sorted out. A doctor will be able to give you a proper medical diagnosis and help you to recover from the yeast infection as quickly as possible.

Even so, knowing the symptoms of a yeast infection is important for all women as it is such a common problem. Most women think of a creamy discharge when they think of a yeast infection and this is definitely a common symptom, but there are others too.

Some of the other symptoms are pain or discomfort when urinating or having sex and a lot of itchiness, although again you don't need all the symptoms to have a yeast infection.

You should never be embarrassed by having a yeast infection. Nearly all women will get one at a point in their lives, and many more than once, so all doctors have seen the problem hundreds of times in all likelihood.

If you have been to see a doctor about a yeast infection in the past and were told to use a certain over the counter drug then you could try using that again for a new yeast infection, but if it doesn't work or you keep getting a recurring yeast infection then always go back to the doctor.

Nearly 3 out of 4 women get a yeast infection at some point in their lives making it one of the most common problems. However men can get it too, and although it is less common, it may still cause symptoms. It can also be passed to the female during sexual intercourse creating a cycle of infections if nothing is don't to stop it.

You should talk to your doctor more about your male partner also having a yeast infection if you think it might be a problem. He or she will be able to give you the most up to date medical advice.

It is unlikely that if you have a yeast infection that you will miss the symptoms, as they can be very troublesome and uncomfortable. Don't be tempted to try and "cure" it yourself without first getting medical advice.
