Cysts that occur within the pelvic cavity are very common. Generally speaking they are harmless (benign), although they can cause pain at times. The majority appear whilst women are of child bearing years, although some are seen in post menopausal women. Some women are not aware they have cysts as they do not cause any pain.
The types of cysts that can occur can be broken down into categories as follows:-
Functional Cysts - These frequently grow during the ovulatory part of the menstrual cycle but have a tendency to disappear after a few menstrual cycles have passed. They are caused by the non release of the egg during ovulation and fluid then collects causing the swelling.
Graafian Follicle Cyst - This is another version of the above simple cyst. Also known by the name follicular cyst.
Corpus Luteum Cyst - Prone to rupturing during a women's period. They will resolve themselves over the course of three months.
Hemorrhagic Cyst - A cyst which becomes filled with blood when a blood vessel bursts. Blood leaks into the cyst causing right sided abdominal pain. Sometimes the cyst will burst and cause the patient immense pain. The initial pain is caused by the swelling of the cyst as the sac stretches with the flow of blood into it. Women who experience a ruptured cyst will usually not require an operation as the situation will resolve itself within a few days after rest.
Endometrioid cyst - Called chocolate cysts also. These are caused by the condition, endometriosis. These occur when the endometrial tissue implants itself on or inside the ovaries, bleeds and grows larger within the ovary. This can cause monthly pain as the endometrial tissue will bleed when the woman has her period, but the blood is trapped and has no place to go.
